Kirkie: Nvidia Just Bankrolled Its Own Replacement

Today's Rant

Kirkie here, with today's AI news in 90 seconds… or the Dunks drive-thru gets my order right on the first try since they built the place.

First up, Reflection AI dropped Beam, a 501-billion-parameter open model everybody's calling the "DeepSeek of the West" — and Nvidia wrote them an eight-hundred-million-dollar check to build it. That's wicked backwards when you think about it — the chip guy funding the model that needs fewer of his own chips, like a loan shark bankrolling the credit union next door. Speaking of which, DeepSeek's raising another twelve, maybe fifteen billion — Tencent and, I kid you not, a battery company — while the founder's out there promising the weights stay open like some kind of goddamn boy scout. Meanwhile Meta and Microsoft are dumping Claude like a bad prom date — budgets cut a third, usage cut in half — because Anthropic had the balls to compete with the two clowns paying its rent. Then OpenAI, classy as hell, watermarks your homework invisibly for the EU while jamming ads into your image results — narcing on you AND selling you a mattress in the same breath. A researcher found government AI agents — ours, France's, JP Morgan's — trust each other like idiots at last call, so one bad prompt spreads like a stomach bug on a cruise ship. OpenAI's wandering bots are the reason California's got them under subpoena now — turns out they'd been poking around the CDC and the Mayo Clinic like a raccoon testing every door handle in the building.

This is Kirkie, your AI news guy… signing off from an IT ticket I filed in March, still "in progress," zero comments, and the guy assigned to it quit in June.
